The Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA)
is the largest osteopathic student organization in
existence and is the student affiliate organization
of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). The
leadership of the new LMU-DCOM chapter of SOMA is
very excited for the opportunity to set the bar
high for this organization at DCOM. We are well on
our way to accomplishing that goal with 11 officers
and 149 total members (93% of the Inaugural
class!).
We have already established what will become our 2 annual hallmark SOMA events: The Spring Gala and the Fall OsteoBlast. The Spring Gala will be a formal event co-sponsored by SGA that will include dinner, dancing and Casino Night activities. The Fall OsteoBlast will be an ice-breaking event held the weekend after the first exam to bring first and second year students together with faculty, family and friends. It will include various outdoor activities ranging from obstacle courses to dunk tanks where students will have the opportunity to see their favorite professors under water! We have many other plans for programs and events on the DCOM campus and throughout the community, some of which we have begun to implement and others that are on their way! A complete list can be viewed on the goals can be seen on each committee’s portion of this website.
Two of the primary focuses of the LMU-DCOM SOMA chapter will be to maintain strong political involvement as a chapter and to enhancing professional development of our members to help mold all LMU-DCOM students into competent, responsible and respectable osteopathic physicians. Active participation in events such as DO Day on the Hill and all National SOMA conventions will help facilitate this involvement on a national level.
It is of the utmost importance to our chapter that we as an organization accurately reflect the desires and the character of the LMU-DCOM student body as a whole. Therefore, it is our goal to have every SOMA member at LMU-DCOM actively involved in SOMA in some capacity. We are always open to input, comments and constructive criticism at any time, so feel free to contact us!
